Cochlear and Hearing implants in Delhi

Cochlear and Hearing implants in Delhi

Dr (Prof) Ameet Kishore
Sr Consultant Surgeon ENT, Head Neck, Neurotology & Cochlear Implants

India Cochlear And Hearing Implants
What is the operation of a cochlear implant?
Even though the hearing nerve may be present, sensorineural deafness occurs when the hair cells are missing or destroyed. Due to damage to the hair cells, these nerves are unable to carry sound. On the other hand, these nerves may send electrical signals to the brain when stimulated electrically. Cochlear implants avoid the destroyed hair cells by converting ambient sounds into electrical impulses that are then sent to the brain through the hearing nerve. It is now feasible to get the newest Cochlear and Hearing implants in India because they are readily available. To ensure that you receive top-notch treatment, our team includes the region's best cochlear implant surgeon and audiologist.

Cochlear Implants (CI) are electronic devices that are surgically inserted into the cochlea (inner ear), restoring hearing to those who have severe to profound hearing loss and who cannot utilize hearing aids. More than a quarter of a million individuals across the world have received the gift of sound thanks to Cochlear. The greatest cochlear technology is now available in India. You may now simply get the newest Cochlear and Hearing implants, which are readily available in a variety of item choices. Within India.

Biologically Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA and Bonebridge)
These surgically implanted hearing aids are made to support people with certain kinds of hearing loss. They operate on the basis of the bone conduction theory, according to which the vibration of the skull bone transmits sound to the inner ear. Preclinical results show that the BB performs practically similar to the BAHA and may be beneficial to individuals with conductive and hearing deficits as well as those who have one-sided hearing loss.

Middle ear implant called Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB)
For those with specific forms of hearing loss who are not pleased with or cannot wear traditional hearing aids, this electronic device is implanted in the middle ear. The Vibrant Soundbridge converts the information into mechanical vibrations rather than a hearing aid, which can only increase the volume of sounds entering the ear. Even strong tones may be heard incredibly effectively because of the middle ear's structures being especially animated by this mechanical life.

Brainstem implant for hearing (ABI)
The hearing center in the brainstem receives sound directly from this surgically implanted electronic gadget. It is an alternative for those with severe to profound hearing loss when a cochlear implant is not an option because the cochlea or the hearing nerve has been damaged or removed.

With Cochlear and Hearing Implants, Cochlear Implant Surgery in India
Under general anesthesia, the Implant Surgery takes about one hour. To reach the middle ear and break open the mastoid bone, an incision is made behind the ear. Electrodes are then implanted once the internal ear (cochlea) has been opened. The procedure necessitates a one- to two-day stay at the medical center.

Clinical Experience And Special Skills

I am extremely competent in the management of all common conditions of the ear, nose and throat that affect both children and adults.

I have extensive surgical experience for conditions that affect the ear and hearing(tympanoplasty, stapedotomy, mastoidectomy), nose and sinuses (septoplasty, endoscopic sinus surgery), head and neck (parotid and thyroid gland surgery).

My experience at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children has empowered me to provide speciality services in all areas of paediatric ENT.

I have also developed super-speciality skills in Neuro-otology : cochlear implantation, bone anchored hearing device implantation, microscopic and endoscopic skull base surgery and the management of adult and paediatric deafness and dizziness.

Otology / Neurotology / Skull base surgery

This is a particular interest of mine and I have had wide exposure to otologic conditions and their treatment, particularly chronic otitis media, otosclerosis, deafness, tinnitus and dizziness. I perform all types of middle ear and mastoid procedures both in adults and children, and am competent in the use of the Argon laser in stapedotomies and chronic middle ear surgery.

I was attached to the neuro-otology and skull base team at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow and have experience in a variety of neuro-otological and skull base procedures. I am competent in the medical and surgical management of dizziness and facial paralysis. I am experienced in the surgical management of acoustic nerve tumours, glomus tumours and other lesions of the lateral skull base.

I maintain a regular and prospective audit of all otologic operations performed since the commencement of my training. I have thus accumulated personal audit data of all tympanoplasties, stapedectomies and mastoidectomies performed over the last 20 years.

The Cochlear & Hearing Implant Programme at Apollo Hospital, Delhi

I obtained my surgical experience in cochlear implants at the Scottish National Centre for Cochlear Implants (Crosshouse hospital) in 1995. I was also actively involved in the assessment of adults and children towards suitability for cochlear implantation, as well as post operative sessions with the scientists when patients are reviewed for speech processor programming (Mapping) and rehabilitation.

I am also competent in the audiological assessment, surgical technique and post-operative care of adult and paediatric patients requiring bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) and middle ear hearing implant (vibrant soundbridge).

The above experience has empowered me to set up the cochlear and hearing implant programme (for children and adults) at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital. I am the team leader for the implant programme and have performed over 500 cochlear implant procedures in the last 8 years. I have also setup a BAHA and Vibrant Soundbridge surgery service. We are one of the first centres in India to have independently carried out Auditory Brainstem implantation both in a child and an adult (with NF2)

I am a designated mentor surgeon for a number of new cochlear implant programmes in India, to help new surgeons and programmes start and run their individual services successfully.

Endoscopic Nasal, Sinus and Skull base surgery

I routinely perform endoscopic sinonasal surgical procedures. I am comfortable with the use of specialised tools such as balloon sinuplasty, microdebriders and radiofrequency. Also perform advanced endoscopic procedures such as orbital decompression, dacryocystorhinostomy, sphenopalatine artery ligation.I am competent in endoscopic skull base surgery and work closely with neurosurgical colleagues for managing lesions of the anterior skull base, approach to pituitary tumours, closure of CSF leaks etc. I have experience in the use of Surgical Navigation Systems.

Paediatric Otolaryngology

My training at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow has empowered me to manage Childrens’ ENT disorders. I am competent in the management of the child with stridor (noisy and difficult breathing) and conditions that affect the paediatric airway. I am competent in the complete range of procedures that may be necessary in the surgical management of a child with airway problems; such as laryngo-brocnhcoscopy, lasers, paediatric tracheostomies, cricoid splits and laryngotracheal reconstructions with costal cartilage grafts.
